VENTURA, California – District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced today that Cornell Williams (DOB 02/13/99), of Los Angeles, and Emonnie Walden (DOB 08/08/03), of Los Angeles, have pled guilty for their roles in a series of organized retail thefts from ULTA Beauty.
Carwash Company Settles Case for Unlawful Hazardous Waste Disposal
On March 11, 2019, Simi Valley-based Simi Auto Spa & Speed Wash illegally disposed of hazardous waste into an on-site storm drain that directly connects to the Arroyo Simi waterway which turned the waterway bright green. The hazardous waste, auto detailing wax, contained the chemical sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, which is acutely toxic to aquatic life. In a stipulated Final Judgment, Sam’s KH Corp. agreed to pay $65,000 in civil penalties, $37,405 in cost reimbursement to multiple responding state and county agencies, and an injunction prohibiting the business from unlawfully disposing of chemicals into the waterway.
Santa Paula Company Settles Illegal Pesticide Sales Case for $625,000
A multi-agency investigation revealed that Fruit Growers Supply sold restricted pesticides to non-permitted users numerous times in 2019 and 2020. These pesticides included Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs) which have been identified in more than 90 percent of tested deceased mountain lions, 88 percent of tested deceased bobcats, 85 percent of tested deceased protected Pacific fishers, and 70 percent of tested deceased northern spotted owls. In a stipulated Final Judgment, Fruit Growers Supply agreed to pay $625,000 in civil penalties, restitution, and supplemental environmental projects.

VENTURA, California – Acting District Attorney Cheryl M. Temple announced today that Caden Crowell (DOB 11/19/98), of Camarillo, was sentenced by Judge Ryan Wright to 50 years to life in prison for the first-degree murder of David Smith, of Thousand Oaks. On July 14, 2020, Crowell pled guilty to the first-degree murder of Mr. Smith and admitted the special allegation that he personally used a firearm causing death.

Totten announced today that the review of the circumstances surrounding the November 7, 2018, shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, by Ventura County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ronald Helus and California Highway Patrol Officer Todd Barrett has been completed.
Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc., to Pay $1.49 Million in Settlement of Environmental Violations
A spontaneous fire from store waste led to an investigation directed by the District Attorney’s Office which discovered that Bed Bath and Beyond was systematically sending regulated hazardous wastes from stores to local landfills throughout California. In a stipulated Final Judgment, Bed Bath and Beyond agreed to pay $1,327,500 in civil penalties and reimbursement of investigation and prosecution costs, and $171,250 to fund environmental enforcement in California. Bed Bath & Beyond cooperated during the investigation and dedicated additional resources towards environmental compliance.

District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that Vidal Vargas Morales (DOB 12/30/1960) has been charged with one felony count of lewd act with a minor 15 years of age in violation of Penal Code section 288(c)(1). Mr. Vargas was arrested by Ventura County Sheriff’s detectives on Monday, February 29, 2016, based on allegations arising from his employment at the Saint Francis of Assisi Church in the city of Fillmore, California.

District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced today that Steven Cortez (DOB 03/09/1994), of Santa Paula, was convicted of two counts of attempted murder in violation of Penal Code section 664/187(a) for a December 27, 2014, shooting in which he shot at two young males in the city of Fillmore, striking one of them.
